Message from the President and CEO

Cleantech San Diego is grateful to our members for your continued support this year and for the dedication you’ve shown to upholding the promise of a thriving cleantech economy for all.

This year, despite the uncertainty that many industries faced during the pandemic, we saw the economic impact of the cleantech sector grow, including more jobs, higher wages, and a new high for our industry’s regional economic output totaling $9 billion. In addition, the San Diego region rose to the top when it was named the #9 Cleantech Innovation Hub in the U.S. based on our region’s well-funded research institutions, robust technology development, successful startups, and support infrastructure.

Amid ongoing COVID-19 challenges, we gathered virtually to network and learn. We welcomed new member companies with expertise ranging from clean energy solutions to cleantech finance. We engaged in local, state, and federal advocacy efforts on behalf of our members and the industry. And we continued to further our reach into the community.

A major triumph was the contract extension we received from the California Energy Commission to continue our Southern California Energy Innovation Network (SCEIN) program for another five years. Over the program’s first five years, SCEIN companies have commercialized technologies that are accelerating market transformation in transportation electrification, grid and building decarbonization, energy efficiency, and resiliency. With a growing staff and an impressive pipeline of companies to work with, we look forward to continuing to support energy startups with innovative technologies that are helping California achieve its climate goals while growing the cleantech economy.

As you will see, this annual report is not only about the work we do, but it is also a celebration of the successes of our members and the industry. Thank you for all you do to make our region a true example of cleantech leadership. Because of you, we have achieved exciting milestones in 2021 that will continue to serve our industry and our mission into the new year and beyond.
