Cleantech San Diego Annual Report 2022

Building a thriving cleantech industry for the benefit of the economy, the environment, and all members of the community.

Message from the President and CEO

This year, Cleantech San Diego celebrated its 15 Year Anniversary, a milestone that further validates the vision our founders had for the promise of a thriving cleantech economy that could bring enduring benefits for business and the planet alike.

Our membership continues to be a well-rounded mix of public, private, and academic institutions, boosted this year by increased interest from venture capital firms, attracted by the exciting technologies being developed by the startups in our flagship Southern California Energy Innovation Network (SCEIN). We are also happy to have welcomed a growing number of SCEIN companies deepening their industry connections and becoming Cleantech San Diego members.

Now in its seventh year, SCEIN continues to be a powerful catalyst for clean energy startups as well as an inspiring forum for idea exchange. Leveraging newly expanded program offerings such as grant-writing support, we are excited to even further boost the positive impact SCEIN entrepreneurs will have on California’s climate goals and the cleantech economy.

Looking ahead into 2023, I am encouraged by the strong market growth our members have secured for the cleantech industry amid shifting policy drivers and investment trends. This year, our industry saw the passage of major legislation at the state and federal levels, resulting in new policies and significant investments that will help drive the cleantech industry well into the future. It will be exciting to see how those investments are coming into the San Diego region and into the hands of our member companies and entrepreneurs.

As we enter the new year, Cleantech San Diego remains committed to supporting our members’ endeavors with an eye on the technologies of the future. Be it hydrogen power, lithium extraction, carbon capture, or even nuclear fusion, we look forward to exploring what’s next.

Thank you for all you do to make our region a pillar of cleantech leadership.
