From Slime to Surfing and Sustainability — New products and uses for algae.

Stephen Mayfield of UC San Diego has developed engineered algae for mass production that uses CO2. His research group is exploring engineered algae biomass that can be used for fuel, food, therapeutics and other biomaterials. Collaborating with industry led to the creation of a surfboard from this new algae production method that was presented to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.
