Joint Technology Forum on “Green Technology of the 21st Century”

November 15, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This half-day workshop aims to inform the audience about key developments in renewable energy as well as water conservation projects. Experts from both industry and academia have been invited to participate as guest speakers to comment on cost effective measures for generation and storage of renewable energy, such as solar energy, as well as technological advances in energy grid for integrating renewable energy from multiple sources.

Since Southern California is in an historic period of shortage of portable water, it is important for the general public to be informed about the efforts in reducing the water wastage as well as measures taken to increase the availability and utility of reclaimed water. As generation, accumulation, and transport of water can all be energy consuming, it will be of great interest to learn about the different perspectives for simultaneously solving energy and water issues.

Speakers and Tentative Topics:

Ping Liu, Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-e)/Department of Energy: Searching for Transformational Energy Technologies: The ARPA-e Story

Jim Avery, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E): Sustainable Energy Initiatives at SEMPRA Energy

Byron Washom, UCSD: The World’s Largest, Most Diversified Portfolio of Distributed Energy Resources within UCSD’s Microgrid

Richard Gersberg, San Diego State University: Indirect Potable Reuse (Pure Water) in San Diego, CA: A Sustainable Water Supply

Ke Sun, Caltech/Jet Propulsion Lab: Towards Scalable, Sustainable Artificial Photosynthesis: Enabling Unstable Materials for Solar-Fuel Production

The Forum will be held in Lecture Hall 242 through the main entrance (facing the Revelle Plaza) of Galbraith Hall.
