Title:

Predicting and Planning for Extreme Precipitation from Atmospheric Rivers

Speaker:

Dr. Anna Wilson, Field Research Manager, Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes

Abstract:

Dr. Wilson will address the mission of the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the data and tools they collect and use to predict and monitor extreme precipitation from atmospheric rivers and ways they collaborate with partners to help with water management and risk and resilience. Atmospheric rivers are filaments of concentrated water vapor transport in the atmosphere that account for approximately half of California’s annual rainfall, are crucial to the water supply in the West, and responsible for over $1 billion in flood damages annually.
