Smartville Second-Life EV Battery Energy Storage System Commissioning
October 19, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

On October 19, Smartville Inc. in collaboration with UC San Diego will commission and debut its first commercial energy storage system – called MOABTM – using repurposed battery packs from Tesla and Nissan Leaf electric vehicles to power campus infrastructure.
The MOABTM battery storage system stores local solar energy during the day and powers the UC San Diego facility after the sun goes down. The batteries also provide 48 hours of emergency back-up power to tenants and critical equipment located in the University building.
The groundbreaking research and demonstration project is supported by the California Energy Commission and the Department of Energy ARPA-E Program. The California Energy Commission Chair David Hochschild will be attending to say a few words at the commissioning event.
