World Energy Investment 2016: A Discussion with International Energy Agency Chief Economist Laszlo Varro

Investment is the lifeblood of the global energy system, and attracting large amounts of capital and investment flows is vital to accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy while also maintaining energy security and expanding access to energy to all. The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) first comprehensive analysis of investments in the global energy system, World Energy Investment 2016, will be released on September 14 in London. This event marks the first time the report will be presented in the United States.

As he presents the new IEA report, Laszlo Varro will examine key energy investment questions facing governments and policy makers and highlight their implications across the energy spectrum, such as:

• The impact of the sharp decline in fossil-fuel supply investments on energy security and the market fundamentals for oil, gas, and coal
• The drivers of the current shift towards low-carbon power generation and how investment trends need to evolve to finance an accelerated transformation in line with climate change goals
• How the current low fuel price environment is affecting investment prospects and continued improvements in energy efficiency programs
• How competition between fuels and technology is being reshaped by dramatic changes in capital costs for solar PV and wind, oil and gas production, and LEDs
• The impact of the Chinese economy’s rebalancing and lower demand growth expectations on energy investment
