K-12 Schools Sustainability Strategy Collaborative Update
Cleantech San Diego is pleased to be a partner in supporting SDG&E’s implementation of two strategic initiatives to help advance the region’s K-12 schools energy management strategies to include Zero Net Energy (ZNE) building retrofits and data analytics/behavioral efficiency.
Prop 39 Zero Net Energy Pilot
The California Investor Owned Utilities’ (IOU) Proposition 39 ZNE Pilot Program is accepting Round 2 of applications for K-12 Schools and Community College pilot sites across the state. Applications are due March 31 and a webinar will be held March 7, 10:00 – 11:00 am to provide more information. Here in the SDG&E service territory, we have approval to launch one additional ZNE pilot in round two, as we will continue supporting the implementation of the San Diego Unified School District’s first ZNE pilot at the Vista Grande Elementary School.
As the 2013 Integrated Energy Policy Report (IEPR) clearly states California’s policy goal of retrofitting 50% of existing commercial buildings to ZNE by 2030, we encourage all school districts to consider submitting an application to participate in this pilot program. For those school districts that are not selected to participate in the 2016 pilot, we will continue to share best practices through the SDG&E K-12 Schools Sustainability Strategy Collaborative.
Energy Conservation Competition
The enrollment period for SDG&E’s 2016 K-12 Schools Energy Conservation Competition is open through March 15. Participation of teacher/student-led teams provides a hands-on learning experience and the introduction of a site-wide energy dashboard to create broad stakeholder awareness and engagement in energy and sustainability initiatives.
