Region is strong in green buildings, clean vehicles, renewable energy, and venture capital invested in cleantech industries

SAN DIEGO, CA, November 4, 2015 – Cleantech San Diego, together with partners at Clean Edge and the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, today released The San Diego Clean Tech Landscape report. The report, authored by Clean Edge and sponsored by Chubb, details the San Diego region’s cleantech sector, illustrating key trends and highlighting successes and opportunities in the region.

Clean Edge released its first Clean Tech Leadership Index for the country’s 50 largest metro areas in 2012. Since then, the San Diego region has become a clean-tech marketplace leader, rising from the #11-ranked metro in 2012 to #4 in 2015.

“With this new report, we wanted to delve into what has driven the San Diego region to make itself into one of the top cleantech markets in the country,” said Clint Wilder, Senior Editor, Clean Edge, who credits location in one of the most environmentally progressive states in the nation, strong regional economy, and abundant solar energy potential to the San Diego region’s success.

The Index results show that the San Diego region is particularly strong in deploying green buildings, clean vehicles, and renewable energy, and in venture capital invested in cleantech industries. The report also outlines state policies and local projects influencing the region’s cleantech sector.

In addition to the comparative datasets for San Diego’s performance, the publication highlights key takeaways for the region, which include recommendations for advancing energy efficiency in buildings, managing water, expanding electric vehicle infrastructure, maximizing cross-border opportunities for market entry in Mexico, and attracting funding to the region.

“Over the past several months, the City has been working to cement San Diego’s reputation as a world-class leader in innovation and our cleantech industry is a major highlight,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer. “The findings in this report, paired with Cleantech San Diego’s collaborative efforts, prove San Diego continues to be one of the cleantech capitals of the world.”

“We are pleased, but not surprised, that San Diego continues to rank among the best regions in the nation for its cleantech market strengths,” said Cleantech San Diego President and CEO Jason Anderson. “We attribute this top ranking to the strength of our regional partners: private sector innovators and public sector visionaries who keep San Diego on the cutting edge of the clean energy economy.”

As part of its growing Smart Cities San Diego initiative, Cleantech San Diego is helping to match clean technology service providers with public sector entities to help advance energy efficiency across complex facilities at places like Downtown San Diego, the Port of San Diego, the City of Chula Vista, and the San Diego International Airport. Cleantech San Diego is also engaging the local startup community to help secure the future of the region’s cleantech economy and continue to attract investment.

“Measurabl’s rise to dominance in green building, energy and sustainability software is proof that startups, and cleantech startups in particular, can raise significant venture capital, attract premiere talent, and compete internationally from right here in San Diego,” said Measurbl Founder and CEO Matt Ellis. “There’s no place I’d rather build and grow our company.”

“Chubb is proud to sponsor this report from Clean Edge and Cleantech San Diego highlighting the region’s leadership in the clean technology sector. We hope the insights shared here will have a positive impact on the growth of the cleantech industry in the San Diego region and beyond,” said Amy Ingram, Worldwide Clean Tech Segment Manager, Chubb Group of Insurance Companies.
