Leads all top cities over the 2012 Index – aggressive focus is credited

SAN DIEGO, CA, June 4, 2013 – Clean Edge, the world’s first research and advisory firm devoted to the clean technology industry, released its inaugural “U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index” today. San Diego ranks number 7 out of 50 cities in the ‘Metro Index.’ California ranks number 1 in overall ‘State Index.’

The report’s methodology uses more than 20 metro-based performance indicators including: LEED certified projects, Energy Star buildings, electric vehicles, public transportation, green house gas emissions from large facilities, venture capital investments and clean energy patents.

San Diego shows the best improvement of any top-ranking city over the 2012 Index because of its aggressive focus on both public and private sectors in expanding the region’s cleantech economy.

“In a world that demands business data analytics in assessing performance and predictive modeling, this quantitative report captures this region’s ability to demonstrate its economic vision and cleantech brand,” said Holly Smithson, president and COO of CleanTECH San Diego. “This comprehensive benchmarking increasingly exerts the region’s market gains while serving as a timely guidepost for financiers, policymakers, and companies.”

San Diego shows a solid all-around performance of 11th place or higher in all four categories, which includes 1) green buildings, 2) advanced transportation, 3) clean tech investment, innovation, workforce and 4) clean electricity and carbon management.

“With over 800 clean tech companies in the region and San Diego’s top ranking in the ‘U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index,’ the firepower to translate cleantech innovation, technology and collaboration into an economic engine and replicable model is intensifying,” Smithson added. “CleanTECH San Diego, through its member companies and industry stakeholders, will continue to ensure the region maintains its leadership position.”
